United Way Announces Forum to Address Drug and Alcohol Issues in Sarnia-Lambton

FORUM TO ADDRESS DRUG AND ALCOHOL ISSUES
IN SARNIA-LAMBTON

Monday, February 12, 2007

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton, in partnership with the University of Western Ontario Research Park, Sarnia Campus will be hosting a Drug and Alcohol Forum on April 17th, 2007.

The forum was developed after a number of community consultations identified drugs and alcohol as a growing problem in our community. The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton focuses its funding on prevention services in Lambton County with measurable outcomes and impacts.

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton and the UWO Research Park will bring together direct service providers with the objective of identifying issues around drug use, identifying existing services, gaps in services, and any duplication of current services.

"We need to talk about what we are doing here already and where the opportunities exist. Then, we as a community need to fill in the gaps in order to address the causes of this issue," says Dave Brown, Executive Director of the United Way. "Following the forum, a report will be developed and all participants will be invited back to determine which steps, as a community, we can take to address this issue. We are pleased to have partnered with the UWO Research Park and look forward to more opportunities in the future," he adds.

The forum will also include keynote speakers. The UWO will provide Dr. Louis Gliksman, Director, Social, Prevention & Health Policy Research Department, Director, PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre on Addiction & Mental Health, Centre for Addiction & Mental Health Toronto. Names of the other keynote speakers addressing Community effects of drug use and effective interventions will be announced in the near future.

The United Way currently funds over 65 programs and services through 29 funded agencies.
