United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Girl Guides leaving United Way

United Way of Sarnia-Lambton
Girl Guides leaving United Way

Friday, May 25, 2007------The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton and Girl Guides Lambton Board announced together today that the Girl Guides will no longer be a United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Funded Agency as of July 1, 2007.

Sharon Fogg, Lakeshore Division Commissioner with Girl Guides said, "This is not a shocking announcement, it is simply a result of provincial re-structuring of Girl Guides which will result in our local office program co-ordination disappearing after June 30th. All co-ordination of Girl Guides across the province will be done from our Ontario Council in Toronto," she said. "There will be no effect on the girls who participate in Girl Guides in Lambton County; it will all run as usual as far as the Guiders are concerned. Individuals wishing to support Girl Guides and the United Way with a donation can continue to designate their donation to go to a local Girl Guide unit and it will be given to that specific unit"

Dave Brown, Executive Director of United Way of Sarnia-Lambton stated, "Girl Guides have been a long time agency of the United Way and we will miss their membership, however, in today's society, organizations have to explore ways to become as efficient as possible and this is one of those cases." The United Way has funded the Office Coordinator program for a number of years. This program allows for a staff person to gather all the programming information for the Girl Guide leaders who are all volunteers. This allows for the volunteers time to be spent on running the Guider programs directly with the girls, and not spending time on administrative duties. After June 30, this support will be done at the provincial level. Brown added that although the local Girl Guides will no longer be a Funded Agency, he is sure the two agencies will maintain their positive relationship and assist one another as needed in future.

As of July 1, 2007, the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton will have 28 Funded Agencies. To become a United Way Funded Agency, the organization must meet a proven need in the community. The United Way requires the service to be in viable operation for a minimum of two years as well as receiving Venture Grant funding prior to the date of application for admission as a United Way Funded Agency.
