Sarnia Transit teams up with the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton to help Build a Better Community
A partnership strategy called Building a Better Community has been reached between the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton, and Sarnia Transit.
"We have been very proactive in joining partnerships in our community and Sarnia Transit is a nice fit", said United Way Executive Director Dave Brown. "We focus our support on agencies that provide a variety of social services. Sarnia Transit meets the transportation needs of many of their clients with the added benefit of contributing to a greener community as well," Brown added.
Part of the partnership agreement includes the mounting of an informational panel in as many as 20 buses displaying contact information for all 28 United Way funded agencies.
"We are pleased to have been in a position to partner with the United Way", said Director of Transit, Jim Stevens. "The ad inside the 20 buses is really a Public Service Announcement geared to give our riders the information they need to identify the programs and services they may require," Stevens added.
On the outside of as many as 12 buses, specially designed "Bumper Stickers" will be displayed at the back and the front of the buses promoting the partnership between the two groups.
Sarnia Transit will place the ads free of charge to the United Way. The transit signs should first begin to appear soon and will run past the United Way campaign wrap-up in January.
Stevens added that there will also be some fund raising opportunities for the United Way. "We are planning a couple of events that will directly raise money for the United Way including our Celebration of Lights Tours when the Christmas lights are in full view, and our traditional New Years Eve service. Riders will be asked to make a donation to the United Way during their free ride on our buses," Stevens said.
The United Way has been proactive in securing partnerships with both profit and not for profit organizations in recent years. BLINDeye Entertainment, the Diabetes Society (the Royal Danish Tenors concert), and the Great Canadian Fly in air show last year alone are examples of such partnerships.
"We believe to keep costs down, and to maximize resources, we need to continue to form more and more partnerships in our community," said Brown. "Our partnership with Sarnia Transit makes a lot of sense," he said.
Jim Stevens said that the decision to enter a partnership with the United Way was an easy one since the United Way isn't just one organization, "it really is an organization that represents more than 30 groups not just in Sarnia, but throughout Lambton."
The United Way has 28 regularly funded agencies, plus provides one-time funding grants to several Sarnia-Lambton agencies annually.
