United Way announces 2004 Community Investments

United Way Campaign organizers have pushed the thermometer over the top. Campaign Chair, Pat Davidson, was very pleased with the results of the 2003 fundraising campaign. "It was a bumpy road at times, but once again, Lambton County residents have pulled together." On Tuesday, the United Way Board of Directors met to approve the 2004 Community Investments to its 28 Funded Agencies.

Of the 65 programs funded, the majority of programs will see the same or an increase in funding while four will see reductions. The United Way funding process is a very indepth, three step process involving three different groups of volunteers; The Panel Review Members, Community Investment Committee Members, and the Board of Directors.

Four funded programs will receive an increase including the rural Transportation Program provided by the Lambton Elderly Outreach. With an aging population and the ambulance service cutting all Non-Emergency transportation, the pressure has been felt by Lambton Elderly Outreach.

Other programs receiving an increase are: Multiple Sclerosis Client Services, the Epilepsy Education Outreach program, and the Anger Management provided by the John Howard Society.

Those seeing reductions are as follows; the Assisted Memberships provided by the Family YMCA will receive $61,750, down from $65,000; the Correctional & Post Release Rehabilitation program of the John Howard Society will see its funding cut from $86,270 to $82,000; the Summer Day Camp provided by the Boys and Girls Club will see their funding at $10,916, down slightly from $11,490; and the Emergency Services provided by the Salvation Army will receive $29,925, down $1,575.

Two previous United Way funded programs will see their United Way funding eliminated. The Volunteer Services program by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind will be reduced to $0 from $5304 and the Assisted Daycare through the Family YMCA will be reduced to $0 from $15,000.

"This year's Community Investment decisions were not easy, they never are," said Community Investment Chair Laura Black. "It could have been much more difficult if the campaign had not been as successful as it was." All the volunteers involved with the Panel Reviews and the Community Investment Committee worked very hard and put many hours into the process. "There are a number of criteria that the volunteers look at when making their recommendations", said Black. "They look at the what outcomes and impacts the program has on the client, their families and our community, the financial responsibility of the agency, the effectiveness and efficiency of the program, the demographics of our community, and the number of funding priorities the program hits."

Overall, the 2003 United Way Campaign raised 103% of its goal, or $1,794,000; within $3,000 of the 2002 total.
