United Way is pleased to support Rebound and Sarnia-Lambton Training Board
Laura Black, Chair of the Community Investment Committee, is pleased to announce today that the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has provided Venture grant funding to Rebound to provide Community Justice Circles as well as the Sarnia-Lambton Training Board to provide a Community Profile.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton will provide a $23,500 grant to Rebound to provide Community Justice Circles. A Justice Circle is a straightforward, practical, cost-effective, problem-solving method of resolving a criminal incident through facilitation of a structured meeting between offenders, victims and the supporters of both. Youth offenders will hear how their behaviour has affected the victim and the victim's supporters. Victims of crime will have a voice in the conferencing process, as they confront the offender, express their feelings, ask questions and, most importantly, have a say in the outcome. The members of the Circle decide together how the young offender can repair the harm he/she has done. "The outcomes of this program are, that the young offender experiences and leaves the Circle with a deeper sense of empathy, with increased competencies and be better equipped to lead lawful and pro-social lives," said Black.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton will also provide an $8,000 grant, to the Sarnia-Lambton Training Board to provide a document to be known as the Sarnia-Lambton Community Profile. This Community Profile will be a fact-based source of reliable, up to date information about the Sarnia-Lambton Community. "With the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton focusing more and more on Outcomes and Impacts of our funding, as are other funders, it is important that we commence an annual review of Community Indicators," Black said. "I am sure that the many groups in our community who are involved in grant writing, funding applications, and foundations will find this resource very helpful." Most of the fact-based information to be contained in the document is already available, but is currently very difficult to extract from the many different sources.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Board of Directors approved the grant from its Venture Grant program. The Venture Grant Program has approximately $90,000 available each year to fund new and innovative programs to the United Way, to meet a need in our community.
