United Way is pleased to support the Victorian Order of Nurses and the
Sarnia-Lambton Training Board
Laura Black, Chair of the Community Investment Committee, is pleased to announce today that the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has provided Venture Grant funding to the Victorian Order of Nurses and the S-L Training Board.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton will provide a $20,000 grant to the Victorian Order of Nurses for a Kids Circle Program. This program will provide bereavement support to children and teens ages 4 to 18 who are facing a life-threatening illness themselves, the life-threatening illness of a loved one or experiencing the loss of a loved one due to illness, accident or suicide. With an increasing number of chronic and terminal illnesses, more children and youth are experiencing a loss of a significant person in their lives. The Kids' Circle program will provide an environment that is comfortable for the child to express his or her feelings and worries. Each child will grieve in their own unique way and this program will meet the needs of each child individually, without limitations.
The clients will benefit from this program by receiving support and guidance through a difficult time in their life, before normal grief feelings turn into problems or health issues or failure at school. No longer will a 6-year-old child be labeled a behaviour problem when in fact he is hurting inside because of the death of his Mommy.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton will also provide a $12,000 grant to the Sarnia-Lambton Training Board to provide the second edition of the Sarnia-Lambton Community Profile. This Community Profile is a fact-based source of reliable, up to date information about the Sarnia-Lambton Community. "With the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton focusing more and more on Outcomes and Impacts of our funding, and the need to direct donated dollars to priority need areas, it is important that we commence an annual review of Community Indicators," Black said. "I know that many groups in our community who are involved in grant writing, funding applications, and foundations have found the first edition of this document very helpful." Most of the fact-based information to be contained in the document is already available, but is currently very difficult to extract from the many different sources. The current document has been used by a wide variety of groups and organizations in addition to the United Way; groups such as the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce, Lambton Seniors' Association and many others.
The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Board of Directors approved the above two grants from its Venture Grant program. The Venture Grant program has approximately $110,000 available each year to fund new and innovative programs to meet a need in our community.
The United Way's Funding priorities are Youth with Physical, Mental or Social Challenges, Poverty and Working Poor Families, Seniors, Medical Programs and Services or Rural Programs. Applications for Venture Grant funding are accepted on a year round basis.
